Production diary

Production Diary
Before 6 weeks
Before the 6 weeks we done a few tasks in preparation for A2. One task that was given to me was to make a poster about a time period we was given 2010 till now. I choose drum ''n'' base and I choose the song Sigma Nobody to Love. The poster I made was explaining how their song came top in lots of countries also a bit about the song. Another task that we done was an essay about how music videos have changed over the years. In this essay we had to discuss the theories of Andrew Goodwin and Laura Mulvey and their view on how music videos have changed or stayed the same. Another task we done in preparation for making music videos in A2 is the Britney spears task in this we had to act out the music video ''hit me baby one more time''. We also had to do some planning for this and break down some of the scenes from ''hit me baby one more time.

Week 1
In the first week of coming back after the six weeks holiday we recapped on what we're doing for the term. also we started on setting up our blogs for a level media. Also we were given the task to consider ''what makes a star'' .This was quite difficult because we first had to consider what a '' star'' was but then we started to understand it some more. Also what we done on this week was make a timeline out of the posters that the class done.

 Week 2
In this week we began gathering ideas about what music videos we could do. We had to choose a song without a music video also a song that does not have a known artist. This was quite difficult because we had to find a person that wasn't known so we didn't know who to look for. Also we found that a lot of the videos that I come across had copyright problems or had a video. Another task we had to do in this week was to analyse Andrew Goodwin's theory that music videos are purely for promotional purposes and the opposing theory that they are for artistic purposes and to entertain the person watching.

  Week 3
On week 3 we done some work on what makes a star. The star I chose was Kanye West we done work on Kanye West then and Kanye West now. We had to describe the differences between him then and him now. With Kanye there was many differences between him then and him now some of which being that he changed from being a gangsta rapper to a fashion designer. Also in this week I done the marketing techniques that is used in the music industry in order to get recognition for their work and how it differs from small artists and big artists

Week 4
During this week we done a digipack. We decided to remake the Gorrilaz cover because we thought it was interesting and we would be able to do it. In this week we also done some research into the history of a digipack and what is usually in a digipack. Another thing that we done in this week is practised lip syncing with a particular song the song we choose was the song that we was going to choose for the video so we could get some practise. It was quite a hard song which meant it was hard to lip sync. We done one more task during this week which was to identify key shots in a different music video so that we could take some ideas from it.

Week 5
During Week 5 I done two big tasks one of them was a music video analysis of RUN DMC Aerosmith Walk this Way. On this essay task we had to analyse what makes the song what it is. I discussed about the song, the type of song what it is for instance performance, narrative  and conceptual. I decided that this song was performance. The last thing I analysed was the camera of the music video and the significance of the shot. Another thing that we done on this week was three mini essays about the past work we done in AS. We had to discuss research and planning, codes and conventions and originality and creativity. We had to discuss about what we done good on these areas and what we had to improve upon.

Week 6
This week we done a website analyses I done it on the Michael Jackson website. This was done to get some ideas for when we eventually had to do ours. Also it meant that we was able to see how they utilised promotional tools also colour schemes to attract different audiences. We had to research newspaper headlines as well and how newspapers are used to brand and advertise artists. I done it about the metro newspaper advertising Kanye West's wireless gig. What I done also in this week was research the other songs in our genre and analyse the conventions of that video so we could use it in our video.

''Kanye West, Drake and Bruno Mars to headline Wireless Festival 2014''

This is an example of celebrity branding being used by newspapers, the newspaper advertises the wireless concert and the artists performing in it Kanye West. This advertises him as it means that he'll get more exposure because there newspaper gets shared 29.4 million times which means they'll all know that he is performing.

Week 7
I started of this week by doing a moodboard of artists in our genre to see the general conventions of electropop artists so we would know what our artist should look like. We analysed the lyrics for our song so that we could get a deeper understanding for the song and produce a better video. In this week we also done audience research on the what our targeted audience preferred (for instance length of music video) so we could incorporate this when making the video.

Week 8
In this week the week before half term week received our feedback from audience and then I put it into a graph to show the results in a visual way. During this week we also done a risk assessment for the filming that we done so we'll know the risks when filming. In this week I also done some tasks that I didn't do in the previous weeks like what music means to me and analysing music videos.

Half Term

Week 10
This week just after half term we began to storyboard all of our ideas so that the week after we were able to film. For the whole of this week we was story boarding.

Week 11
In this week we had to do some research into the location which included saying about the place and a what we'll be filming there. Another thing that we done on this week was the shooting schedule in the shooting schedule we put in the scene that we're filming whether it's inside or outside where it is and the date that we're filming it on. The last thing that we done on this week was a risk assessment which included all of the risks of filming so that we could avoid them when filming.

Week 12
This week we filmed the performance lip syncing shots and performing shots but first we had tochoose which one of us that wanted to do it in the end we choose harry because we felt that he would be most appropiate for the genre of song that we're doing. But we had some problems with the lighting it was too bright on harry so we decided to film it again.

Week 13
In this week I started to plan for the website.
I decided on having for multimedia videos of he's most recent songs so that people going on the website for the first time know what music he makes aswell as a video of he's most recent song so people will be able to see he's newest video which will promote him as an artist.
For the colours I decided on having pretty neutral colours so that the gender doesn't specify to one gender and therefore isolate another gender.

For the information on the artist I decided on having the latest information about he's live show's, and information about how you can purchase he's merchandise also he's bio. All this information on the artist will tell the viewers about him and they'll be able to find out more information about him as an artist.

For the pictures I decided on having a variety of pictures that shows him as an artist in a variety of ways.

.
Week 14
On this week we filmed again because of the lighting problems on the first attempt on this week we again filmed the performance shots. This time we had lower light so Harry wasn't soo bright. We only filmed the mid shots and long shots as we feel that the lip syncing shots wasn't as bright.

Week 15
During this week we decided to change the artist to John this is because we felt that the song is a very high tempo and the character had to be high energy to go with the songs tempo. Therefore we choose someone who was enthusiastic about doing it.  In this week we also choose a female artist to play in our video so that it fitted the song.

   Christmas Holidays

Week 16
This week we started to film our video but we had some problems with the lip syncing because it is such a quick song it's hard for the new artist to pick up the lyrics. Without hearing the song beforehand but by the end he got the hang of it and lip synced the song well.

Week 17
In this week we figured out a name for our artist which we decided on Jayden Blake we decided on this name because it fits in the genre perfectly being an electro genre it fits well. Also I started the website again because I didn't feel that it fit into the genre well enough and went for the swipe more on the home page so it represented the genre more. Also I went for a different background more of a colourful background to represent the electro clubs with all the colour.

Week 18- Week 20
For the next few weeks we was storyboarding our idea for our music video we up to scene 30 on the storyboard before it was time to start filming.

Week 21
In this week we started to properly film our video and we went to Toby's house to film flashback footage and in lesson we also done a bit of editing on the footage. This is what we mainly done but we also done a bit of work on the website as well.

Week 22
In this week we done a bit more of the storyboard until we was about 3/4 of the way through.

Week 23
In this week we continued to film and competed nearly half of the footage. The types of places we filmed where in

Week 24
In this week we took a break from filming and started the website. I took inspiration from the Martin Garrix website because we're in the same genre. This meant that I could represent the genre in the website also.

Week 25

Music videos Essay

‘’Music videos have changed drastically over time and are now unrecognisable from their historical counterparts’'

Question
‘’Explore this statement and discuss how true you believe this to be. Use a range of older example s and contemporary examples. Use some basic media theory to back up your ideas’’

In this essay I will discuss the statement made and seeing if music videos have really changed as much as he says it has. I will be using the same genre of music in different time periods to see if there is a difference between the new and old music videos. I will compare the music videos by using like ‘’Laura Mulvey’s Male gaze’’ theory, ‘’Corteau Hoynes the Effects Model’’ and ‘’ Andrew Goodwins ideas on Narrative, Performance and concept Narrative’’.

History of music videos
The first type of music video was in 1894 when images were projected onto the screen whilst there was a rendition of little lost child. In 1900 there were illustrated songs which captured cinema goers’ attention as they could sing along to the video. In 1925 there were music videos in the theatres which encouraged audiences to sing by a bouncy ball which bounced on the lyrics so the audiences could sing along with the song easier. Later on these became common elements of children’s TV shows. In the 1960’s the Beatles combined music and movies which allowed them to market and express themselves through music videos. Many rock and roll bands followed their lead and used music videos to share their performances on televised music variety shows. In 1974 paved the way with countdown and paves which created teen orientated music programs.

Laura Mulvey’s Male Gaze Theory
This is the theory that women are objects of desire purely for males to look at. Mulvey believes that the audience has to view the film or music video from a heterosexual male’s perspective and that’s why they were seen as such objects. In the earlier music videos the male gaze was used a lot in hip hop and R&B videos, and was criticized for being soft porn in a lot of videos. For instance in DR DRE’s and 2 Pac’s California Love females were used as objects lot to attract the male audience. Modern day videos are somewhat different but not completely. The director of Jason Derulo’s Trumpet’s the director took females into consideration and Jason Derulo was sexualised and seen as an object to be looked at. Although the Male Gaze theory is still in music videos this is shown in Nicki Minaj’s Spaceships where she sexualised and seen as an object like older R&B videos.

Andrew Goodwin’s Theory
He says that music videos are often constructed by the link between the visuals, lyrics and the music plus the artist. Relationships are built between these in the video, and the close-ups of the artists give them the representation and publicity they require. Record labels demand artists to create a video which will sell records. Goodwin also says that a music video is ALWAYS one of the 3, performance, narrative or concept based videos.

Performance based is where the artist appears in part of the music video. Narrative this is where the music video tells a story in the lyrics for example a relationship split up. Concept is where the video is based around an idea which is unusual or surreal for the audience.

Performance music videos is the most used music videos partly because it’s the easiest way to make a music video also because it’s the best way to advertise the artist and a lot of the time it is what the audience want. The Madonna music videos always used performance music videos because people wanted to see her perform as well as sing. This is very similar to BeyoncĂ© in her videos where she is the only thing which the camera focuses on and therefore promotes her as an artist also like Madonna people want to see her dance moves and perform as well as hear sing.

Before in music videos there were very little narrative music videos as no one done it well before. But since Eminem’s Stan which is said to be one of the best narrative videos ever it has been used more and more used. Narrative music videos are like a short film they go through the five stages. First there is equilibrium where everything is settled and normal. Second there is dis-equilibrium where something happens which unsettles the equilibrium. Then there is recognition that dis-equilibrium has happened then there is reparation of the dis-equilibrium. Finally there is a new equilibrium where everything becomes settled. Narrative music videos are often on slow songs so that the song can go with the video better.

Concept is the most unused music video of them all and is used in mostly rock videos when they are trying to be different and entertaining. It has been rare when one is successful and therefore haven’t been used much since first tried.
